Objectives 1.Students will tour the library to learn where the picture books are located, where the story circle is, and where the circulation desk is. 2.Students will practice coming into the library through the IN door checking out at the circulation desk, and going out through the OUT door. 3.They will be introduced to library rules and procedures as these activities unfold through the Native American Story, “Cooperation” 4.Students will experience in the story how to participate appropriately, and how to share in a group story following cues through modeling of the classroom teacher - about when to participate. 5.Students will see modeled book use as the librarian and classroom teacher show how to turn pages from the top down gently.Students who model this behavior will receive dragon stickers. 6.Students will select a book to take back to class from the table at which they were sitting to share and enjoy for the coming week. Materials and Resources 1.Appropriate kindergarten books will be selected for each table. Procedures: 1.Students will line up in the hallway outside the library where they will be invited into this very special place…the Library with a reminder of the Westmeade Way –and its simple rules - The simple rules Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe.They will practice walking to the story circle and sitting criss-cross applesauce and facing the story chair. 2.The students will learn opening routines through singing of our greeting and alphabet song followed with the Nursery Rhyme song. 3.The Story Cooperation will be shared and discussed. 4.Students will go to the tables and learn how to handle a book properly. 5.They will then check their books out at the circulation desk and practice lining up and leaving the library through the OUT door.
